New Unisa journal gives a voice to Africa’s nanoscience expertise

In line with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Open Science roadmap, the African Union Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA) 2063 vision and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) Africa Open Science platform as well as Unisa’s catalytic niche areas, Nano-Horizons was launched on 15 February 2022. The journal is expected to be a vehicle for scientific excellence in the multidisciplinary field of nanoscience and nanotechnologies on the African continent and beyond.

Professor Patrick Ngulube, acting Executive Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, set the tone at the virtual launch of the journal. In his welcome address, he made the observation that it was no coincidence that Nano-Horizons is being launched within the Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation Portfolio, as it represents an innovative initiative that will assist Unisa in shaping futures in service of humanity.  The production and dissemination of research that extends the boundaries of knowledge and supports sustainable development corresponds precisely with the mandate of the portfolio.

Strategically open

The journal occupies a strategic position on the open science map because it will be open to all people who have access to electronic devices and the internet. As an African journal of excellence in the multidisciplinary field of nanosciences and nanotechnologies, Nano-Horizons aims to provide access to knowledge where this was not available before, especially in the global South.

Unisa’s very own Professor Malik Maaza is one of the recipients of the 2022 Spirit of Salam Award in acknowledgement of his dedication to Abdus Salam’s humanitarian passion and vision for cooperation and the promotion and development of science and technology in the developing world. The launch of this journal is a testament to his dedication to disseminating knowledge in both the global South and the world in line with the principles of open science.

The journal is published by Unisa Press and hosted on the scienceopen discovery platform, and its editorial board features an impressive array of respected international and local scholars. It is hoped that Nano-Horizons will soon exert a significant positive impact in the field of nanoscience.

Nano-Horizons welcomes contributions at the interface of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Materials Science, and Computation and Modelling. The journal will consider publishing:

  • mini reviews
  • original contributions
  • original short communications
  • original reports
  • express letters
