Unisa virtual race

You answered the call and Unisa thanks you

The time has come for the University of South Africa to host another Virtual Race campaign. The campaign is aimed at raising funds for laptop devices for students. This is also Unisa’s direct response to the challenges posed by COVID-19, which include some of our students not being able to access their study material, since students are prohibited from visiting campuses and learning centres, because of lockdown regulations.

In line with Unisa’s 2016-2030 strategy, the university is transitioning from an open distance university towards ultimately embracing an e-learning (ODeL) environment. This will enable the university to provide opportunities and hope to thousands of students, who come from indigent backgrounds across the continent.

The need for the provision of student support, within the parameters of the University’s unique and transforming environment, continues to grow against a backdrop of increasing financial challenges that these students face.

The Unisa Virtual Race, an initiative to raise funds for student laptops, was launched in November 2020 and it raised over R14 000 from participants. This initiative formed part of the laptop drive that saw Unisa receiving funds, and more than 500 laptops, from our donors and partners.

To date, four students were able to receive new learning devices with the funds raised through the Unisa Virtual Race initiative. However, Unisa has approximately 150 000 students who require laptop devices to enable them to learn and write exams; the majority cannot afford to buy such devices, because they come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Unisa counts on your support and hopes to have you participate in the 2021 Unisa Virtual Race in order for us to continue shaping futures and defining tomorrows.

This is a Unisa Foundation Project.
