Ms Nomfundo Mthembu

Nomfundo Mthembu is a Lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal specializing in Medical Law, Human Rights, and Healthcare Policy. Her work explores the evolving interface between law, ethics, and digital health technologies, with a focus on reproductive rights, indigenous knowledge systems, and the legal protection of vulnerable and minority groups. In addition to her academic role, Ms Mthembu plays a key leadership role in community-based legal and healthcare advocacy.
She serves as a board member of the Hillcrest Advice Bureau and Bursary Fund and the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, where she provides strategic legal guidance to initiatives aimed at expanding access to education, healthcare, and justice for underserved communities. She has led nationally funded research, including a project on health competition law for the Competition Commission of South Africa, and has presented her research at national and international platforms.
She also serves as Legal Representative in the UKZN Proctor’s Office and as Ethical Clearance Officer for the School of Law, while actively contributing to academic quality assurance as a reviewer and examiner across South African institutions. As former visiting lecturer at the University of Messina (Italy), she continues to foster international collaboration in health law and policy.
