In recognition of the 115 Years of International Women’s Day (1911-2026), 31years since the Beijing World Conference on Women as well as 70years since South Africa’s Women’s March in 1956 and in keeping with the IWD 2026 theme of “Balance the Scales” focusing on justice and equality for women and girls, this seminar will examine how women are affected, constrained and navigating the current geopolitical challenges marked by renewed great-power rivalry, protracted conflicts, democratic backsliding, climate insecurity and vacillating multilateral norms.

Women and girls are also still adversely affected by increased AI-powered online abuse, racial injustice, food insecurity, poor mental health and threats during migration. The seminar aims to critically explore the role, impact and future of women’s leadership, influence and participation in contemporary geopolitical affairs, with a focus on diplomacy, governance and global security.
