Dr Janaka JAYALATH

Dr. Janaka Jayalath Deputy Director General: TVEC Ministry of Education Sri Lanka

Dr. Janaka Jayalath started his career as an apprentice at Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and then worked as a Technical Assistant at Sri Lanka Television Corporation. Later he worked at Sri Lanka Telecom as the Manager (Systems) and subsequently as a Project Manager for two Asian Development Bank (ADB) projects in TVET sector development in Sri Lanka. Afterward, he worked as the Director (Information Systems) at the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), the apex body for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector in Sri Lanka. He is currently the Deputy Director General of TVEC in the Ministry of Education.

Dr. Janaka holds National Diploma in Engineering Sciences from Institute of Engineering Technology. He is a B.Sc. holder of the University of Colombo and completed a Master ‘degree in Computer Science from the same University. He completed the e-Governance Diploma in Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayawardanapura and earned his MBA from the University of Moratuwa. He is a Ph.D. holder of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand in the field of Information Management in TVET.

He has published several research papers on Gamification in TVET in reputed international journals and authored a book on “Quality Assurance of Qualification Frameworks in South Asian Countries” as a UNESCO publication and book chapter called “Using ICTs and Blended Learning in Transforming TVET”, which is a joint publication of UNESCO-COL focusing best practices in TVET.

Dr. Janaka has been contributory in declaring “World Youth Skills Day” which was proposed by Sri Lanka and continuously involving in promoting TVET at various levels nationally and internationally. Further, he has been working as the UNEVOC cluster coordinator for South Asia Sub Cluster, coordinating 9 countries in the region.
