Thabo Mbeki School hosts academics from the University of Tartu in Estonia to discuss 'information pollution'

On Friday 20 March 2026 a delegation of academics from the University of Tartu, Estonia visited the University of South Africa’s Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs at its offices in Pretoria.

The Estonian delegation included Professors Ragne Kouts-Klemm, Andra Siibak and Kairi Kasearu based at the University of Tartu’s Institute of Social Studies. They were received by Professor Anthoni van Nieuwkerk, Mr David Letsoalo, and post-doctoral fellows Dr Bongiwe Mphahlele and Dr Muhluri Nkuna.

The meeting focused on the recently concluded Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, including a discussion on Estonia’s pioneering work relating to the digital society (e-residency and online government services). The meeting then spent time examining progress with the book project entitled ‘The challenges of information pollution/disorder: South/North perspectives.’ Members of both delegations have committed to book chapters, and Dr Mphahlele agreed to be included in the editorial team.

The meeting ended with agreements around deliverables and timelines.
