Short biography
PROF ANDREAS (‘DRIES’) VELTHUIZEN is a peace and security studies specialist focusing on peace and security education.
His research approach is to create innovative solutions for peace and security, with a specific emphasis on violence prevention. He leads, inspires, and promotes peace and human security, working in collaboration with like-minded people worldwide.
The National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa rates him as an established researcher with international standing (C2). Notably, he serves as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Global Change, Peace, and Security and as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the influential African Security Review. His academic publications include two co-edited books, 30 articles and book chapters related to peace and security in South Africa, as well as several short publications. His education consists of a D.Litt. et Phil. in Politics (specialising in African Renaissance Studies), an MA and BA (Hons.) in Strategic Studies, and a BA in International Politics.
Currently, he lectures and supervises postgraduate students in dispute resolution, peace and conflict studies, geopolitics and security management. He visited and presented at workshops and conferences on all continents of the world.
As an alumnus of Unisa, he remains associated as Professor Extraordinarius with the Thabo Mbeki School for Public and International Affairs (where he formally retired in 2021 and worked full-time until June 2024). He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Walter Sisulu University (WSU)and an alumnus of the Maritime Security Course of the Department of Defence of Portugal and the Leadership and Stability Program at the National Defence College in Islamabad, Pakistan.
