Bongiwe holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Pretoria. Her PhD research explored SADC-led mediation through an Afrocentric lens, with a focus on advancing the African agenda. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Thabo Mbeki African School of International and Public Affairs. She has taught mediation, diplomacy, and public policy, and supervised Honours students at the University of Pretoria.
Her work focuses on South African foreign policy, diplomacy, and multilateral forums such as BRICS, the G20, UNSC, SADC, and the AU. She also researches women in peace and security, financial inclusion, climate finance, sustainable development, and energy transition. Bongiwe is building a career in academia, with a strong interest in teaching, postgraduate supervision, policy implementation, and policy-relevant research.
