Prof. Elizabeth Mavhunga
Dr. Elizabeth Mavhunga holds the position of full professor and is a distinguished researcher in Science Education at Wits University, South Africa. Her research endeavors are centered on enhancing teacher professional knowledge to facilitate both the understanding of science and its effective teaching for student comprehension. Her work is grounded in the theoretical framework of 'powerful knowledge theory' and the concept of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), which focuses on the transformation of content for pedagogical purposes.
Dr. Mavhunga's contributions to the field have led to the development of theoretical frameworks such as Teacher Related School Content Knowledge (TerSCK) and Topic Specific PCK (TSPCK), along with its digital counterpart, digital-TSPCK. These frameworks aim to improve teachers' understanding of science and its teaching in both traditional and digital classroom settings. Her work in advancing teacher knowledge has been recognized with prestigious national and international awards from esteemed professional science education organizations, including SACI, SAARMSTE, and NARST.
Prof. Mavhunga leads a research team at the forefront of digitizing the preparation of science education teachers, leveraging the opportunities presented by the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies. She has supervised numerous postgraduate students, mentored a number of postdoctoral research fellows, delivered keynote and plenary speeches at international conferences, and contributed extensively to academic literature through book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles.
