Prof Yuri Shukrinov recently visited the Department of Physics on invitation from Prof André Botha in order to collaborate on research involving chaotic aspects of intrinsic coupled Josephson junctions. This collaboration is part of the Department of Science and Technology (DST)-Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) collaborative agreement which has continued with great success since 2007, when the Department of Physics at Unisa organised the first DST-UNISA-JINR Symposium in the Kruger National Park.
Prof Shukrinov works in the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics in Russia, where he is involved in condensed matter physics. He is internationally recognised for his contribution to phenomenological models of coupled Josephson Junctions, which are used as models for high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors. Over the past two decades he has published extensively on this topic.
The collaboration between himself and Prof Botha was facilitated by similarities that exist between the equations governing the behaviour of coupled mechanical pendulum systems and those for coupled Josephson junctions. Prof Botha has investigated chaos and hyperchaos in mechanical systems, like the triple pendulum, and it is hoped that some of the numerical and theoretical models which he has developed can also be fruitfully applied to the study and simulation of chaos in coupled Josephson junctions. Such chaos is important because, as proposed in their recent article, it may explain the recently observed reduction in intensity of coherent THz radiation that is emitted by certain high-Tc superconductors.
