In its goal to build a research culture at Unisa, the Directorate Innovation and Technology Transfer offers two student support programmes which provide seed funding and mentoring for innovative research projects to staff or academic associates.

In both cases, preference is given to collaborative or joint research projects that are multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary in nature.

The Talent Innovation Programme (TIP), aims to stimulate and support the development of high-quality innovative student projects which seek to provide solutions the challenges that society faces.

Seed funding for innovative solutions to societal problems in the form of grants are awarded on an annual basis to twenty student projects deemed the most innovative.
