About us

The Department of Adult Basic Education at Unisa provides the Certificate in ABET, Diploma in ABET and BEd in ABET (Hons) as well as the Diploma in Youth Development for students who are committed to community development.

Established in 1994 - the Department of ABET prides itself in having trained over 60 000 ABET practitioners who are committed to the slogan of "education for development". They contribute to various sectors in the local and international spheres. They are trained to address the problems of today whilst actively taking on the challenges of the future in areas such as poverty, creating work opportunities and addressing adult illiteracy. Owing to the wide application of its courses, the ABET Department has made various specialist courses available for practitioners who wish to specialise in areas such the teaching of different trades, health education, environmental education, literacy, numeracy, English, water and sanitation and so on.
