SAASTA’s Young Science Communicators’ Competition for master's and PhD students
Background
The Young Science Communicators’ Competition challenges young scientists and researchers between the ages of 18 and 35 to share their science stories beyond their own scientific community.
Themes
To help guide your creative process, this year’s competition requires you to submit pieces aligned to some of the themes of the Department of Science and Technology’s Science Forum South Africa 2018 (www.sfsa.co.za). Align your entries into each of the categories to one of the themes below:
- Science transforming society: Thinking about science, technology and innovation changing society, contributing to the improvement of the quality of living of all citizens, and ensuring ethical considerations are addressed and science-driven development is equitable and sustainable.
- A better world: Thinking about the sustainable solutions science, technology and innovation can provide to global challenges like poverty, inequality, inclusive development and a secure society.
- Innovation shaping the industry of tomorrow: Thinking about how the exponential pace of progress in science, technology and innovation is disrupting every industry in every country and how the so-called “fourth industrial revolution” will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another.
Eligibility
The competition is open to students / young scientists / researchers, between ages of 18 and 35, registered or working at higher education institutions or science councils.
Value of the awards
- Winners: R10 000
- Runners up: R5 000
Application process
Submit communication pieces on any science-related subject, preferably in your own research field, aligned to one of this year’s themes, in any of the following categories:
- Writing: Write an article of no more than 700 words for popular print or online media.
- Audio clip: Record an audio clip of no more than 3 minutes long for online or broadcast media.
- Video clip: Produce a video clip of no more than 1 minute long, for online or broadcast media.
- Open: Produce a creative communication piece, using any mode of communication, such as poetry, infographics, cartoons, drama.
- 2019 Year of Indigenous Languages: Produce an article, audio clip or video clip about your research in any of South Africa’s official languages that will engage local communities.
