Message from Prof Mandla Makhanya, Unisa's Principal and Vice-Chancellor

Dear Unisa Student

Best wishes for the New Year!

As you are aware, Unisa registrations got off to a rocky start this year as a result of a student protest called by the National Student Representative Council (NSRC). This resulted in a national shutdown of many of Unisa's campuses.

With students unable to register at Unisa regional offices, the university urged all students to register online. I am delighted that so many students heeded the call and registered online. The substantial increase in online registrations during this registration period is a true reflection of Unisa as an ODeL institution.

I am mindful that some of the issues raised by the NSRC will require our ongoing attention, but I am also deeply appreciative of the manner in which the engagements took place. The university and the NSRC reached consensus on 12 January 2019 and plans are underway to ensure full implementation of the agreement.

On behalf of the management and staff of the university, I would like to sincerely apologise to all the students who travelled to our regional offices during this period - making costly financial sacrifices and possibly taking time off work - but were turned away. I thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

I wish you the very best for your 2019 academic year and trust that it will be a successful one.

Kind regards
Prof MS Makhanya
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
