Call for registration / nominations for student structures / organisations to participate in the upcoming SRC election

In line with clause 2.7 of the Unisa Electoral Policy for a Student Representative Council, the IEC hereby calls all student organisations / structures within Unisa to apply / register to participate in the Unisa SRC election.

The process and requirements

Student organisations willing to participate in the election must register with the IEC and provide the following:

In addition to the above requirements, the Electoral Policy prescribes that student organisations should obtain endorsement from 100 students to qualify to participate in the elections. This endorsement should be in the form of a handwritten list with eligible students' signatures in terms of section 2.3. However, this requirement has been modified in light of the prevailing Covid-19 regulations that restrict movement and physical interaction. The IEC will roll out an electronic platform by the closing date by which student organisations must register for the SRC election to enable students to endorse each student organisation's registration to ascertain compliance with the section 2.3 of the Electoral Policy in terms of the required threshold of 100 students.

Please note that at least 100 eligible students (in terms of clause 2.3 of the SRC Constitution and clause 2.7.3 of the Electoral Policy) may endorse the registration of student organisation for the purposes of this election. Eligible students are students who are registered for any of the following formal qualifications:

  • Higher certificate
  • Advanced certificate
  • Diploma
  • Bachelor degree
  • Bachelor honours degree
  • Advanced diploma
  • Postgraduate diploma
  • Master's degree
  • Doctoral degree

Students registered for non-formal qualifications are not eligible to nominate or vote. Non-formal qualifications include Short Learning Programmes (SLPs), that is, courses which are (1) less than 120 credits; (2) focused on the part of qualification but will not lead to the achievement of a qualification, and all non-subsidised short courses, courses, advanced short courses, advanced courses, programmes, advanced programmes, workshops, and Unisa seminars.

Opening and closing dates

Applications / registrations / nominations by organisations / structures willing to participate in the upcoming Unisa SRC election will be open on 21 January and close at 16:00 on 25 January 2021. • The IEC will only register organisations / structures that comply with the above-mentioned requirements. Should an organisation / structure manage to secure the required information on time, they are allowed to submit immediately to the IEC instead of waiting for the last day. This will give the IEC ample time to do the verification as and when the registrations are received.
  • It is a requirement that the process is done electronically.
