Invites Proposals for the "2021 Research and Innovation Open Distance and eLearning Virtual Conference"


Proposals are invited from academics, scholars, researchers, and emergent scholars for the UNISA Research and Innovation virtual Conference, which will be held from 4-6 August 2021. The aim of the conference is to encourage debate on contemporary and new opportunities, challenges and models facing Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL) in a globally connected digital era.

I.       The Theme of the Conference is:

Mediating Open, Distance and eLearning in the Advent of Global Crises”

II.      Sub-themes

 Additional sub-themes delegates might want to consider include, but are not limited to the following:

  • The nexus between equity and quality in ODeL: reconsidering quality, access and equity
  • Open and distance education post Covid-19: unbundling and re-bundling, emerging business models, new forms of delivery, the changing role of faculty, revisiting structure and flexibility
  • Using student data to mediate and improve teaching and learning

III.      Conference Structure

  • The conference will feature plenary sessions at which invited speakers will give keynote addresses.
  • There will be 80 minutes panel discussions where invited experts will debate topical and pertinent ODeL research issues.
  • Full papers will be presented at scheduled breakaway sessions. Presentation length: 20 minutes followed by a 10 minutes Q&A session.
  • Proposals for workshops, work in progress and shorter papers will also be considered.
  • Depending on interest a stream for doctoral students will be offered.

Notification of acceptance and feedback

18 April 2021

Submission of final paper for oral presentation

V.      Ethical and Scholarly Etiquette

  • The Research and Innovation virtual Conference is organised as a scholarly event.
  • The papers submitted for presentation will therefore be subjected to double blind peer review.
  • Selected quality papers will be invited for submission in a peer-reviewed conference proceedings. More details regarding the format and submission process will be communicated in early 2021.
  • Arrangements will be made with Unisa Press to publish other selected papers in a special issue scholarly journal still to be determined.
