Announcing the 2019 Student Showcase Coaching Session and Mini FameLab Competition

The Directorate Innovation, Technology Transfer and Commercialisation invites dynamic young Unisa researchers between the ages of 21 and 35 and with a post graduate qualification to present their research at a ”Talking Science” coaching session and mini FameLab competition on 4 and 6 September 2019 respectively.

The coaching session and competition take place at the Enoch Sontonga Conference Complex, Sunnyside Campus.

Held as part of the annual Student Showcase, the competition is to researchers what Idols is to singers – a platform to display unique research to colleagues and peers - and ultimately to society as a whole.

You have just three minutes

Presenters will compete against researchers from other Colleges so, competitively speaking, you need to make every effort to impress as you have just three minutes to capture the judges’ attention with your research.

The mini competition is a dry run for what will be expected at the national leg of the competition, which is in turn part of the international FameLab Competition (first started in 2005 by the Cheltenham Science Festival competition). The international competition is run in over 25 countries.

To date, over 5 000 researchers have participated in the international competition with a global audience of millions. Participants will not only raise their profiles as researchers and meet other researchers from all disciplines in one fun event, but they also stand a chance of winning some great prizes and receiving international science communication training from some of the world’s best science communicators.
