The University of South Africa (Unisa) in partnership with the Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke Institute (CMMI) and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will be hosting a virtual ‘dialogue’ between Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke and Dr W.E.B Du Bois on the 28 October 2021.

The intercontinental dialogue seeks to be a gathering between South Africa and the United States of America and connecting with the rest of the globe virtually. This dialogue will reflect on the leadership qualities, values and actions of Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke and her teacher, whilst attending at Wilberforce University Ohio USA, Dr W.E.B Du Bois.  The question posed is Maxeke & Du Bois: Lessons from the Student and Teacher and how these lessons can help us reflect and construct the role of education on some of our pressing leadership issues as society today.

Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke was a leader, social and political activism and the first black woman to graduate with a university degree in South Africa, earning a BSc from Wilberforce University Ohio in 1901.
