Research and Innovation Virtual Awards 2021

Event date:
06 August 2021
Start time:

Ten years is a significant slice of time, even for a 147-year-old university. This year, Unisa is proud to present the 10th edition of its annual Research & Innovation Awards, introduced in 2011 to honour the university’s best and most successful researchers and innovators.

The awards are not remarkable only for their continuity. Each year’s award ceremony has contained elements of freshness and originality that make the awards a much-anticipated event on the Unisa calendar. In 2020, for example, new awards were added to recognise Unisa’s most successful external grant holders and most prolific innovators for disclosures made and patents awarded.

2021 will again be different.

For the first time, the Research & Innovation Awards will be held virtually, enabling the ceremony on 6 August 2021 to reach a much wider, more geographically dispersed audience than ever before, without losing any of the sparkle for which awards have become known.

Media personality Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp is the programme director, and the musical entertainment – always a high note at the annual awards will be provided, with permission from the Unisa Music Foundation’s Professor Karendra Devroop, from the South African Jazz Songbook, a collaboration between the Music Foundation and the United States Embassy in Pretoria.

More sparkle is assured from Natalia Molebatsi, celebrated South African writer, performance poet and cultural worker (not to mention the Unisa Library’s marketing coordinator).

This is the backdrop for the real business of the evening, paying tribute to the university’s top researchers and innovators for their work in 2021. This year, over 80 awards will be presented to worthy academics.

6 August 2021 promises to be an awards event like  no other; a fitting tribute to the researchers and innovators who hold the university’s name high.
