Jaicee Bam (mentor and lecturer), Maxine Vosloo, Brian Currie, Prof. Elmarie Sadler (ED: CAS), Munyaradzi Ruchaka, and Xolani Ncube

The College of Accounting Sciences is proud to announce that the Unisa Team, represented by its third-year students, has made it to the Top 6 of the global CFO Case Study Competition.

The team is one of 372 teams from 60 universities and 35 countries across five continents who participated in the competition. The CFO (Chief Financial Officer) Case Study Competition is an international, annual multi-round business management and leadership-focused case study competition organised by The Charter Quest Institute.

Mentored by Jaicee Bam from the Department of Management Accounting, the team consists of four third-year CAS students: Team leader Munyaradzi Ruchaka, Maxine Vosloo, Xolani Ncube, and Brian Currie. The students had to prepare and show understanding of, amongst other important concepts, their decisiveness and leadership skills, strategic analysis, strategic implementation, and innovation.

To be placed in the Top 6 is a remarkable achievement, said CAS Executive Dean, Professor Elmarie Sadler. “The college is very proud of the team and its lecturers who so adequately prepared our students for a real-life situation. We want our students to think in such a way that they can shape practice fit for purpose,” she said.

You can catch the announcements of the top six on Mindset Learn Network DSTV Channel 319, StarSat Channel 309 and OVHD Channel 134 on Saturday, 8 July, at 12:00, or on Monday, 10 July, at 21:00.

Competition Format and Rounds

The subsequent rounds will proceed as follows:

Round 2: The People’s Choice (Public Votes – Broadcast & Social Media)

The top 6 winning teams are invited to submit another video link, this time a 75-second two-part video:

  • Part 1: Introducing their team, why they entered, as well as the learning lessons.
  • Part 2: Setting out their hopes and dreams including how The CharterQuest Institute & The CFO Case Study Competition could assist their future career.
  • The videos then go live on broadcast and social media over a 60-day period for the public to have their say by voting for the best video. The team with the highest votes from the public will earn 2 points to their credit going into Round 3.
  • Each of the six winning teams are invited on an all-expenses-paid trip to Johannesburg to deliver their 10-minute presentation live, and take questions for 10 minutes from the mock Board comprising a panel of eminent judges. This will be held at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
  • The judges will then select the top three teams to compete at the national finals the next day.
  • An extension of the case study scenario will be handed to the final three teams; they will be given two to three hours to analyse and return to present their recommendations to the mock Board for 10 minutes in front of an esteemed panel of judges, and the audience.
  • The judges will probe each team for a further 10 minutes on their analysis and recommended strategies, and then decide the winning team to be crowned the CharterQuest Future CFOs & Business Leaders 2017 at a formal award ceremony at the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton.

Round 3: Semi Finals (Presentations) 12 October 2017
