New TVET master's class has begun

The new class of TVET employees earmarked to end in 2019 has begun in earnest in April 2018 as the College of Education held a proposal writing workshop for 34 students who are employees of TVET colleges in the Free State and North West Provinces.

The workshop was held for the purposes of fast-tracking students through the Master’s journey that included discussions on how to choose a topic, titles and addressed the whole detail about academic writing. This session gave them an opportunity to interact with supervisors who gave them insight into the different aspects of proposal writing.

The TVET colleges are participating in the programme which is similar to the one offered to the Majuba TVET College. According to Prof Sello Mokoena, Project Leader, the project showcases Unisa’s ability to reach out to its students. “Above all, it also puts emphasis on the working partnership that Unisa has with SACPO and the colleges within the TVET sector.”

Unisa’s vision of shaping futures has been activated in the TVET sector as the university continues to provide education to TVET lecturers in assisting them to access post-graduate qualifications which are required for teaching at colleges. Some of the fields that have been registered by students are in education management, inclusive education, adult education and maths education.

Fast-tracking the project will take one and a half years, which will be completed by the end of 2019 for them to graduate by 2020. “By the time they graduate, they must be able to write journal articles from what they have studied. They will be taking this unique expertise away from their studies as they will be able to be accomplished writers and researchers,” said Prof Mokoena at the end of the class.
