Sabelo Mhlungu (President: Unisa Convocation) addressing alumni at another event at Emperors Palace

Over 120 alumni attended the Unisa Durban Alumni event where Sabelo Mhlungu, President of the Unisa Convocation, was guest speaker. He spoke about development issues currently prevailing in the higher education sector, which, he said, eventually led to the implementation of free education and insourcing at some of the universities in the country.

He was addressing alumni on these issues and the achievements of Convocation at the Southern Sun Maharani in North Beach on 21 April 2018. “These are the developments we need to applaud and as a critical stakeholder in the higher education sector, convocation and alumni need to receive the holistic analysis and perspective of these developments.”

He further appealed to alumni for contributions towards tuition fees in light of the country’s current credit ranking review and economic outlook, which continue to pose a threat to tuition fees. “Unisa currently has students in the system who have completed their studies but cannot graduate because of outstanding fees. The group also includes final year students who have no more than seven modules to complete.”

Mhlungu said Unisa will engage other strategic partners to establish a Unisa crowdfunding initiative towards tuition fees, which will be done closely with the Unisa Foundation.

The meeting elected Oswald Thami Maluleka as the new Durban Alumni convenor.
