The finalists in the Jazz Category of the Unisa National Piano Competition were announced on 24 July 2019 in Pretoria. They are Thabiso Mfana and Ntando Ngcapu. The hugely popular final round takes place on Friday 26 July at 19:00 in the ZK Matthews Great Hall.
The jazz finalists will perform with a rhythm section consisting of Amaeshi Ikechi on double bass and drummer Rob Watson. Tickets are sold at Computicket.
Two classical pianists, Willem de Beer and Lezanti van Sittert will also perform on Friday.
They will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto in B flat minor and Liszt’s first Piano Concerto with the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cock. The jazz finalists will perform before interval, followed by the classical finalists after interval.
The first prize is R75 000 and the second prize is R45 000 in each category.
