The annual Unisa Music Foundation orchestral Christmas Concert recently took place in the ZK Matthews Great Hall. The event ended the 2018 Unisa Music Foundation Concert Series.
The 80-piece Unisa Music Foundation Youth Orchestra was conducted by Tsholofelo Sithole. The orchestra consists of young learners from Temba, Mamelodi, Mabopane, and Soshanguve. They entertained the audience with hits such as Chariots of Fire, the Triumphal March by Verdi, Thuto, Finlandia by Sibelius, a tribute to Hugh Masekela, Hello by Adele, and a Christmas medley.
After interval, the Unisa Music Foundation Wind Ensemble performed arrangements of John Philip Sousa highlights, Pavane in Blue by Ted Huggens, the Slavonic Dance no 3 by Dvořák, and A Christmas Festival by Leroy Anderson. The wind ensemble consists of more advanced wind instrument players, augmented and supported by members of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra. They were conducted by Jaco van Staden.
Many family members of the musicians attended the concert and showed their support and interest in their children’s music studies.
The 2019 Concert Series will start on Sunday, 3 February 2019, with a recital by the brilliant Italian pianist Mariangela Vacatello in the Miriam Makeba Concert Hall at 16:00.
