Sandy Winfield Jere is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of South Africa (UNISA), College of Science, Engineering and Technology, Department of Mechanical, Bioresources and Biomedical Engineering since February 2026. His research interests lie in human vulnerability, investigating the molecular and cellular effects of blast wave and tissue interaction, specifically mechanotransduction in fibroblast cells exposed to high mechanical cues. His highest qualification is a PhD in Biomedical Science obtained from the University of Johannesburg. As a biomedical researcher, Dr Jere specialises in the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying tissue regeneration. Previously, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Laser Research Centre, University of Johannesburg, and his research area focused on the application of low-level light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation therapy, to promote tissue repair and modulate inflammation in chronic/slow-to-heal diabetic wounds. He investigated how specific dosimetric parameters of light influence cellular signalling, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix remodelling and wound healing in diabetic conditions. His contributions to scientific development in the field of photobiomodulation therapy include over 17 well-cited scientific publications. He is a member of the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP) and the South African Chemical Institute (SACI).
