Unisan makes her mark globally

Adéle da Veiga, Associate Professor, School of Computing, CSET, Unisa

"It is a privilege to add the name of Unisa to the chapter and to represent Africa’s leading open, distance and e-learning (ODeL) institution in such a project," expressed Prof Adéle da Veiga of the School of Computing of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET). This after she authored Chapter 5 of the book Cybersecurity education for awareness and compliance, which was chosen to be featured in the IGI Global K-12 Online Learning E-Book Collection.

The book was published by international publisher IGI Global in 2019 following a rigorous double-blind peer review process. It focuses on cybersecurity training and education to help organisations where there is lack of security awareness and compliance, often the root cause of incidents and breaches. The twelve-chapter book was authored by authors from, among other countries, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and South Africa.

The chapter authored by Da Veiga aims to explain the concept of security culture and how organisations can go about instilling it practically, as well as how to measure it. Furthermore, the outcome of the security culture assessment conducted by organisations can be used as input to define security awareness, training and education programmes aiding employees to exhibit behaviour that complies with security policies.

"The K-12 book collection comprises 285+ titles that can be used in online education. Online education has traditionally been used in higher education, but due to changes caused by situations like Covid-19, schools and teachers of K-12 students (grades 1 to 12) find a need for digital education to develop online learning experiences for students. The K-12 collection was assessed and selected by IGI’s Global executive editorial board to address the needs of K-12 educators and to present them with cutting-edge research for online learning," explained Da Veiga.

Prof Adéle da Veiga authored Chapter 5: Achieving a security culture in Cybersecurity education for awareness and compliance, which was chosen to be featured in the IGI Global K-12 Online Learning E-Book Collection.

Congratulating the proud author, Unisa’s Chair of the Department of Information Systems, Prof Shawren Singh, describes Da Veiga as someone who knows how to make friends and inspire research. Singh could not hold back expressing the pleasure of working with Da Veiga and how the department is proud to be associated with her and her success. He reiterated that everyone wants success, but it only follows those who make a true approach to knock at its doors.

"Adéle, we know the hard work and dedication you have for the academic enterprise. Your dedication to your craft was no surprise to me. You are a passionate, methodical researcher whose work has been dually recognised by your peers. We look forward to a long and prosperous research journey with you. It is my request that you continue sharing your passion and enthusiasm for research with all emerging researchers," says Singh.

Da Veiga says she embraces every opportunity to learn. For her, working on an international book project was an experience where she learnt more about collaboration and improving research and writing skills. It also provided her with an opportunity to give something back to the community in a local and international context where she can share experiences and lessons learnt to help others.
