Joey served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the South African Police Service for thirteen years. She joined Unisa (during the former Technikon SA) in 1990. Joey had presented papers at conferences nationally and internationally on Management Principles. She had also co-authored research articles and book chapters on Policing principles as well as participated in the training of police students in Swaziland, Sudan and Ethiopia.
