Injury Mortality Surveillance Colloquium

The University of South Africa (Unisa) and South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is hosting a Colloquium on Injury Mortality Surveillance 2018-2022 in Mpumalanga on 25 May 2023. Unisa, SAMRC with partners in the Provincial Departments of Health, especially the Forensic Pathology Services from Mpumalanga, and more recently those from Limpopo, North-West and Gauteng, are collaborating to enhance data collection technology, data system performance and efficiency, the supportive human and partnership capacities, and the dissemination strategies and responsiveness required by the country’s multiple publics. The Injury Mortality Surveillance 2018-2022 colloquium offers pandemic and post pandemic injury mortality findings, reflections and updates from provincial surveillance systems, progress on technological innovations and real-time data efforts, and provide highlights of the research and policy implications of the current work. Injury surveillance is essential for the identification of critical national and local research questions and for the formulation of improvements to injury knowledge, health care practices, and support and prevention strategies. This colloquium is anticipated to contribute to the current national efforts to promote South Africa’s violence and injury prevention goals as indicated in the NDP 2030.

This Colloquium is part of the Unisa 150 Year Celebration and celebrates the research, capacitation and advocacy contributions Unisa makes to this significant South African and continental concern.
