The following workshop will be co-located with ISTE 2019.

Lessons from a Statistician: avoid pitfalls in quantitative research

Facilitator: Hennie Gerber

“To consult the statistician after an experiment is finished, is often merely to ask him to conduct a post mortem examination. He can perhaps say what the experiment died of.” This is a quote from the famous Statistician Ronald Fisher

This workshop will be about ensuring that all the essential design aspects of a quantitative study using a questionnaire as measuring instrument, is adhered to.

The following aspects are critical:

  • The scales in the questionnaire must be valid and reliable
  • The sample must be large enough for the statistical techniques
  • The variables in the questionnaire must be measured in such a way that the relevant statistical techniques can be done to answer the research questions.

The use of mixed methods research with questionnaires will also be touched on.

We will be announcing additional workshops in due course.
