Academy of African Languages and Science (AALS)

Welcome to the home page of the Academy of African Languages and Science (AALS)!

Our mission is to contribute to the intellectualisation and modernisation of the African languages by enhancing the status and use of the African languages in the scientific, technological, academic and educational domains.

We are a small, dynamic research team within the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) that strives towards innovative interdisciplinary solutions at the intersection of language technology, the sciences and the African languages. We emphasise long-term collaboration with partners in UNISA, nationally and internationally.

We conduct research on multilingualism in science and technology, language diversity, cultural diversity and indigenous knowledge systems. This is achieved through the development of high-quality digital African language resources and language technologies.

AALS will co-host the Grammatical Framework Summer School in Stellenbosch, 3-14 December 2018. This is the first time that it takes place in Africa. See the Announcements page for more information.
