Drug Discovery and Development is a complex multi-disciplinary and technically intensive field. The main disciplines involved are biochemistry, pharmacology, computational biology and chemistry. The following figure outlines a typical drug discovery and development process as well as technologies associated with it.

This stream will feature speakers on the different aspects of DDDR including preclinical studies, Clinical studies, the critical technologies used in DDDR as well as intellectual property management. In 2019, this stream will focus on Medicinal Chemistry and Phytochemistry.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Advanced Approaches in DDDR
  • Medicinal Chemistry – Databases and their use
  • Phytochemistry – The road from bench to bedside

Stream programme:

08 – 10 April: Opening of the Annual Interdisciplinary Academy
29 July - 02 August : Seminars within the stream
04 - 08 November: Week-long Interdisciplinary Summer School (Presenting the research outcomes)

Faculty:

  • Prof Monde Ntwasa; Department of Life and Consumer Sciences, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, UNISA

* Invited Researchers to be announced.
