Coastal areas contribute a great deal to the global economy through job creation in fishing, shipping and tourism. However, these communities globally face various challenges related to climate change such as rising sea levels, coastal erosion, sea surges and rising sea temperatures which impact the livelihoods of people in those communities. As such this project aims to develop resilience and adaptation capacity in collaboration with coastal communities.
We are currently partnering with government departments, communities across South Africa’s coastal municipalities, and institutions of higher learning. The overarching objective is to develop, co-design, and co-deliver research initiatives that boost resilience and sustainability of South African Coastal Cities in the face of growing climate and socio-economic challenges. The project further aims to contribute towards national, continental, and global development through the adoption of the National Development Plan (NDP), the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
