Michele Havenga taught commercial and corporate law at Unisa from 1986. She was Director of the School of Law (2007-2013), Director of the School of Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Graduate Studies (2013-2016) and Executive Dean of the College of Graduate Studies (2017-2018). She was previously in private practice, having been admitted to the High Court of South Africa as an attorney, conveyancer and notary public. She obtained the degree of Doctor of Laws in 1995 with a thesis entitled “Fiduciary duties of company directors with specific regard to corporate opportunities” and has published widely in corporate and commercial law. She was an NRF rated researcher from 2003-2020. Michele was elected Visiting Fellow to Clare Hall College at the University of Cambridge in the UK, where she conducted research from 1998-1999 and was subsequently elected as Life Member of the same college. She also served on the Standing Advisory Committee on Company Law from 2003 until its dissolution in 2011.
