Grateful to Unisa for making education accessible

Tebogo Maloba

In 2018, Tebogo Maloba completed a National Diploma in Safety Management with Unisa and then continued with a BTech in Safety Management, which she completed in 2020. She further enrolled for a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Management, which she completed this year; she is waiting for her graduation date during the spring graduations. Maloba has also been accepted for a PhD in Environmental Management at Unisa, pending her final results.

Maloba, who was born in Seshego, Limpopo, states that Unisa is a unique and special university in that it is an open, distance and e-Learning (ODeL) university, which, she says, caters for a large variety of students, fosters collaborations and is economically friendly.

"Unisa has positively impacted my life tremendously because I acquired three qualifications. I am also grateful for the opportunity to have been offered funding by the Division of Student Funding, which greatly impacted my academic progress," she says.

Maloba says she has been working at Transnet Freight Rail for 15 years and highly appreciates Unisa's versatile teaching and learning, which enabled her to work and study simultaneously.


Good education required to change the world

Maloba says with Unisa's excellent education, one can reduce poverty, decrease racism, eliminate gender inequality, prevent needless deaths and, most importantly, foster peace. She asserts that it is essential for universities to make education accessible to create economic transformation and societal change. Furthermore, she states that education is a tool that allows people to acquire knowledge and understand the world, identify their needs, apply that information to improve and inspire others, and, ultimately, change the world.

She says Unisa's 150th anniversary is a remarkable milestone not only as the founder and leader in ODeL, but also as the institution of choice, particularly from its rich history of serving humanity through teaching, learning and future-proof education that remains economically accessible towards its students regardless of their background. "Happy anniversary, Unisa; what a great milestone you have achieved as an open, distance and e-Learning institution. I wish you many more years of positively impacting society," she says.

Encouraging Unisa students, Maloba concludes: "Keep going no matter how tough it gets because it is not about how you start or what happens in between, but how you finish."
