Celebrating 145 years

Lighting the way for 145 years

An African proverb says that a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle – and to this one can add, two candles cast more light than one. This has been the cornerstone of the Unisa philosophy during its 145 years of existence; the time-honoured principle that if you do your utmost to light up people's lives with the ultimate gift of knowledge, they will go on to do the same for others.

This is evidenced by the extraordinary service to society rendered by Unisa alumni such as former President Nelson Mandela, another former President, peace broker on the African continent and Unisa Chancellor, Thabo Mbeki, entertainer and humanitarian Yvonne Chaka Chaka, activist, academic and businesswoman Dr Dr Mamphela Ramphele and newly elected President Cyril Ramaphosa (who can forget 'now is the time to lend a hand - send me'). Unisa is also proud to count among its alumni countless individuals whose lesser known, but equally important efforts have contributed to a better society.

This year Unisa celebrates 145 proud years as a beacon of knowledge and inspiration on the African continent - as a leading light shaping futures, and being illuminated in turn by its partners, its stakeholders and the worldwide community it serves.
