About

Vice-Principal: Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation

A relatively new focus at Unisa, the Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation Portfolio was established in 2011 to spearhead research as a strategic business goal. To achieve this the Portfolio believes that certain key elements should be present.

Essentially, strategic leadership guides research and innovation, which in turn generate socially relevant knowledge that influences technology, industry and society.

The Portfolio supports the key institutional academic imperatives of Unisa, improving academic performance in teaching and learning, research and innovation, and community engagement, to enhance institutional impact and student success.

Operating from a position of strength

Unisa has considerable research assets on which the Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation Portfolio thrives. These include attracting top researchers through our collaborative approach; taking a focused approach to human capital development; driving a transformation agenda that focuses on transforming the cohort of researchers who are research active and produce research outputs; investing in quality research facilities and equipment; placing emphasis on multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research that solves problems for society and industry; and upholding a reputation as one of the biggest producers of master’s and doctoral graduates in South Africa.
