The Chancellor:

  • is the titular head of the University;
  • confers all University qualifications on behalf of the University;
  • opens and dissolves a congregation of the University;
  • performs such other functions as assigned by the Council.

Criteria for the selection of a Chancellor

The Chancellor should be someone who is:

  • held in high esteem in society;
  • a prominent South African;
  • academically well qualified and associated with academic and intellectual endeavours;
  • a role model;
  • preferably not a serving politician;
  • endowed with leadership skills and qualities.
