About tutorials

What is the ITM?

ITM stands for Integrated Tutor Model which was implemented by Unisa in 2013. This model comprises of e-tutoringas well as face-to-face tutoring (which can also be broadcast via video conferencing by arrangement between the regional learning centres).

What is a tutorial?

In UNISA the study package comprises largely of: the study guides, tutorials letters, reference materials such prescribed text and some forms of media e.g. DVDs where applicable. The tutor plays an important role in mediating between the packaged learning materials and the student. Tutorials are not lectures; they are a facilitative space which is planned as part of UNISA’s ODeL Model; being a way of supporting students to understand what is being taught, thereby enabling students to develop their own independent learning skills.

Why do students need tutorials?

Tutorials provide students with means of learning. They help the student develop:

  • self reliance
  • useful ways to process information
  • teamwork and co operative learning skills
  • communication skills
  • responsibility for their own learning

E-Tutoring (on-line tutoring)

What is e-tutoring? E-tutoring entails the delivery of teaching and learning online via the internet. An e-tutor is the person who undertakes the role to support and enable students to learn online effectively

Who are oure- tutors?
E-tutors are qualified experts who are practitioners and specialists in the subjects in which they are appointed to be e-tutors. They are drawn from mostly other education institutions, public and private organisations and are appointed as Independent Contractors to work on a part time basis.E-tutors are sourced nationally as they work on a virtual platform from anywhere in the country and need not to be at the same location with the students.
How do I know if I have an e-tutor or where to get hold of one? When you receive a system generated mylifee-mail notification, informing you that you are allocated an e-tutor. To access your tutor, log on to myUnisa you will have an additional module tab with the module code. Once you have opened the additional module tab you can start communicating with your e-tutor through the discussion forum or other communication tools available on the group site as prescribed.
How do I participate in online tutorials? You will interact with your e-tutor and collaborate with your fellow students on the module tutor site that is on the myUnisa platform. Your tutor will provide guidance on how this interaction will take place. Your participation in the activities that take place on the tutor site is crucial to your success.
What are the tutoring platforms and which tools are used? E-tutoring takes place on the myUnisa platform which is online and makes use of tools such as discussion forums, announcements, etc. for teaching and learning. You will need to activate your myUnisaaccount, as well as activate your myLife Unisa e-mail accountto access the module tutor sites.
How do I access the Unisa online platform?

Unisa has provision for Internet access at the Unisa Regional Learning Centres. Students could use the computers in the computer Labs or could use their own computer or mobile devices by accessing free internet Wi-Fi at the Unisa regional centres.

Additional free Internet access is made available for all Unisa registered students at the Telecentres. These are public venues located within communities that have been contracted by Unisa to provide students with access to computers and the Internet, to enable them to gather information; complete and submit assignments, take care of administrative needs, and learn by communicating with lecturers, tutors and other students while they develop essential digital skills. You need to activate your myLife account to access these services.

How do I know whether my module has e-tutors?

Modules with e-tutors are listed on this module list. This list is updated regularly as e-tutors are activated for additional modules. If you cannot find your module on the list after activation has been completed for the semester, contact your lecturer.

Face-to-Face tutoring

What is face-to-face tutoring? Face-to-face tutoring involves face-to-face contact sessions between the students and the tutor. 
Who are our tutors? Face-to-face tutors are qualified experts who are practitioners and specialists in the subjects in which they are appointed to be face-to-face tutors. They are drawn from mostly other educationalinstitutions, public and private organisations and are appointed as Independent Contractors to work on a part time basis
How do I join face-to-face tutoring? To join face-to-face tutorials you need to go to the Unisa Regional Learning Centre nearest to you and enrol for tutorials. You will receive information about the dates and times of the sessions for the modules you had enrolled for. 
How do I participate in tutorials? You need to prepare adequately for your tutorials. Attend tutorials regularly and participate actively in a tutorial. You have to work cooperatively with other students and the tutor.
How is face-to-face tutoring carried out?

Tutorial classes are conducted on a face to face contact basis - that means students meet with their tutors in a classroom setup, at designated venues and at specific times at the Unisa Regional Learning Centres.
