Purpose: To develop knowledge and understanding of the origins, evolution and geographical spread of English; develop knowledge of the emergence and significance of World Englishes, with a particular focus on the development and characteristics of South African Englishes; to develop the ability to recognize and describe significant features of language in a range of English texts To acquire critical awareness of the status of English in the global linguistic context; to acquire critical awareness of the social and political implications of the spread of English worldwide.
