"Research for Sustaining our Tomorrows"

Unisa is a true home to researchers and a centre for innovation... a place where boundaries are pushed and new thinking is sparked.

Universities in South Africa are at a crossroads. Escalating financial pressures, shrinking research funding, demands for curriculum reform and question marks over relevance have placed higher education institutions in the spotlight like never before. Institutions are taking a long, hard look at how they can future-proof themselves, and Unisa is certainly not shying away from the sustainability debate – as will become apparent during the 2018 Research and Innovation Week (R&I Week).

Being held from 26 February to 2 March, this year’s R&I Week has the theme, “Research for Sustaining our Tomorrows” and will delve deep into some intriguing, thought-provoking topics. Are there global precedents for the challenges we face in South Africa? What lessons can we learn from universities in other parts of the globe? Critically, as local funding dries up, how can local researchers compete for international grant funding? The answers are key to the sustainability question.

This is Unisa’s seventh annual R&I Week and is a not-to-be-missed event. The hosts, the university’s Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation Portfolio, have assembled an impressive line-up of expert speakers from many parts of the world. Click here for the full programme.

The event is open to researchers from Unisa, other higher education institutions and science councils, and will take place at two of our campuses, the New Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria and the Science Campus in Florida near Johannesburg.

Over the years, R&I Week at Unisa has become known for its fascinating presentations, stimulating panel discussions and high level of audience participation. Please join us.
