More than 11 000 qualifications awarded at Unisa

Unisa provided the country’s workforce with a healthy injection of newly qualified candidates during the 2017 spring graduation period. The university saw a total of 11 867 students graduate. The figures indicate that a total of 6732 degrees were awarded during this period, including 135 doctorates and 258 master’s degrees. A total of 1379 postgraduate and undergraduate diplomas were also awarded.

Julius Malema (party leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters) received his BA Honours Degree in Philosophy from Unisa last month.

Making up these numbers were many remarkable Unisa graduates, including Julius Malema, party leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Malema received his BA Honours Degree in Philosophy. It has been less than two years since Malema obtained his BA Degree in Political Leadership and Citizenship through the university.

Lead by example

“I’ve come here to graduate with the sole intention of inspiring other people out there. I want to show them that it is possible. We all know that revolutionaries have the responsibility to lead by example, by accumulating knowledge. I believe that the more we read, the more we realise how much we don’t know,” Malema said.

Prof Mandla Makhanya, Unisa Principal and Vice-Chancellor shared words of encouragement. “The university congratulates our entire graduate cohort including Mr Malema for being able to complete all his studies under such a difficult environment as a leader of a political party. We wish him the best and hope he will continue with his education, by doing so to encourage young people to take education seriously in order to uplift their lives,” he said.
