Donations go directly to student bursaries

As an open and distance learning university, Unisa’s fees compare more than favourably with those of contact institutions. Even so, there are thousands of academically deserving, needy students who struggle to pay their fees. This is why donor support is vital.

The estimated cost of one year’s study towards a junior degree at Unisa is R18 470.00, which includes tuition and books. Based on this amount, students are required to register for a maximum of 10 modules per year, at a cost of R1 347.00 per module. The amount excludes a prescribed book allowance of R500.00 per module, adding up to R5 000.00 for all modules combined. The total cost of completing a junior degree in a specified period at the university is R55 410 for one student.

Unisa is doing what it can to assist needy students. The Unisa Foundation has allocated R28 million bursaries that will assist 1500 students over a period of three years.

Despite this contribution, thousands more Unisa students still need assistance. Prof Mandla Makhanya, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Unisa, has appealed to alumni to help bridge the remaining gap in bursary funding. “The strong alumni base at Unisa could make significant financial contributions towards alleviating the shortfall in student bursaries.”
