Department of Statistics

The Department has a flexible tuition system. The wide choice of modules ensures a more than adequate background of basic statistical concepts and techniques. At the same time it offers the opportunity to learn about more specialised topics such as sample surveys, sampling techniques, experimental design, forecasting, data analysis and quality control.

The Department offers distance education in Statistics by means of study guides, tutorial letters, prescribed books and assignments to be completed by students. Discussion classes are offered in Pretoria, Polokwane, Florida and Durban for first-year statistics students in certain modules. For first-year students tutors are also available at the above regional offices, as well as in Johannesburg. Statistics can be taken as a major for BSc and BCom. The Department also offers Honours, Master's and Doctoral degrees in Statistics.

The department is commited to the development of the statistical sciences in the training of professionals in the statistical sciences. Furthermore, we strive to provide quantitative and decision-making skills to students in other disciplines. As leaders in distance education, the range and depth of our programmes ensures a coherent degree structure which brings statistical knowledge and technology skills to students from all walks of life - in the South African market and beyond. Research within the department is in mathematical statistics with the aim to maintain a balance between the development of theory and applications of that theory.
