What is I-SET

I-SET (Inspired towards Science Engineering and Technology) is a Community Engagement flagship project of Unisa’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) and Research and Innovation portfolio.

Aiming to inspire awareness and interest in the fields of science, engineering and technology, I-SET targets learners between the ages of 9 and 16 and their communities.

The project uses fun activities, including the building of programmable robots using Lego MindStorms, to achieve robotic challenges.

What is I-SET Kidz

I-SET Kidz is an online extension of I-SET. It aims to sustain the participation of learners between the ages of 7 and 18 through ongoing training and support.

I-SET purpose

  • To actively market science, engineering and technology by liaising with media and through the hosting of relevant events.
  • To use Web 2.0 technologies to create and deliver open educational resources (OER) for use by learners and their communities.
  • To participate in events that will inspire the interest of the learners in science, engineering and technology.
  • To identify, investigate and research community engagement research questions within the project, that are raised within the wider area of community engagement, both nationally and internationally.
  • To sustain training and development after the I-SET Science expo introductory workshops.
  • To offer free online training and development.
  • To reach and sustain more learners.
  • To develop new ways of teaching Lego Robotics.
  • To groom and build competent teams.

What I-SET is doing

  • It is providing training and support to coaches and mentors of teams within the community.
  • It is providing coaching, mentoring and branding to the CSET teams that represent CSET community engagement at national robotics competitions.
  • It trains and supports CSET staff members who act as mentors to teams and judges at competitions.
  • It is participating in a wide range of science, engineering and technology exhibitions and showcases to actively market I-SET and its activities.
  • I-SET regularly presents workshops at science expos across South Africa. Workshop videos and images are posted on Facebook and YouTube.
