A delegation of the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) recently visited the Management University of Africa (MUA) in Kenya to attend the launch of the first colloquium of 11 Doctor of Business Leadership (DBL) students.  The students are registered under the partnership between the two institutions.  The delegation was lead by the acting CEO & Executive Director of the SBL, Prof Valiant Clapper.

The MUA is sponsored by the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), a not-for-profit management profession membership based organisation.  A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in September 2011 between Unisa SBL, KIM and MUA which involved the offering of DBL and Master of Business Leadership (MBL) programmes in Kenya.  During the recent visit of the SBL delegation a draft MOU was discussed and more areas of partnership were identified including curriculum development, the offering of short learning and postgraduate programmes.  The parties also agreed that joint capacity building for public and private entities, joint research and exchange of academic materials should be investigated.

During the launch, the SBL delegation was welcomed by Prof Jude Mathooko, Vice-Chancellor of the MUA who mentioned that the two institutions are driven by the same focus – to bring about a continent with the potential to be the next super power.  He ensured students of the commitment from both the SBL and MUA towards support and excellence.

Says Prof Valiant Clapper, “The SBL is a business school in the service of humanity and it is therefore important for us to share our expertise with Africa and to enable our continent to participate in the renaissance.”  He reminded students that, in order to complete a DBL they will require a lot of dedication and support.

Mr David Muturi, CEO of KIM said that KIM is the largest public management institute in Kenya and that it offers management and consultancy to government and private sectors.  He said that partnering with the SBL will offer an opportunity for both institutions to strengthen their international outreach in East Africa and beyond.
