It was a dream come true for learners at Makgoka and surrounding high schools when Unisa staff visited them on 20 July 2012. Limpopo Regional staff and College of Science Engineering and Technology (CSET) staff, led by Prof Moshokoa, visited the learners as part of the college’s MathsEdge community engagement project.
The purpose of the visit was to ignite the learners’ interest in mathematics and to impart knowledge on the benefits of studying mathematics and science. Learners were exposed to different careers offered by CSET.
Mr Dennis Ikpe worked hard to demystify the field of science and mathematics and to make learners aware of real life applications of mathematics through interactive dialogue and the MathsEdge 2010 game. Learners and teachers took part in MathsEdge 2010 and there were two worthy winners who walked away with prizes. Other members of the CSET team were Prof SP Moshokoa, Ms E Njurai, Ms F Mokwana and Dr Dube.
Also in attendance was the Circuit Manager, Mr MD Magagane. In his vote of thanks he said, “It was indeed a great honour for the school to be visited by academics in a subject that is most feared. When learners see university lecturers telling them how mathematics can be learned, this gives them confidence.”
