How did the Unisa community use their 67 minutes to make a diffeWith Madiba’s commitment towards a democratic South Africa, International Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated on Mandela’s birthday – 18 July, is more than just a celebration with cake and singing – it’s a day of doing and making a difference in the lives and communities that desperately need a helping hand. Leveraged by the 67 years he gave to the struggle for freedom, this day is also a call for individuals to give just 67 minutes towards inspiring change and taking action in communities.
How did the Unisa community use their 67 minutes to make a difference?

ARCSWiD visited Reinotswe Special School and cleaned all the classrooms. |

The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences visited the Boitshoko Community Home Base Care Centre and Naledi Hospice. They painted the building, prepared a food garden, distributed fruit and donated furniture. |

Staff from the Directorate: Student Development visited Meadowlands High School in Soweto and gave motivational and educational talks to learners at the school. |

Staff at CBM visited Lerato House in Pretoria as part of their Mandela Day contributions. They donated R5 000, cleaned the centre, and bought toys for the children. |

The Department of Corporate Communication and Marketing visited the children at the Rebokamoso Baby Care Centre and donated groceries, clothing, blankets, toys and educational items. |

The Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) visited the Ikangeng Crèche and donated food, toys and clothes. |

The Department of Health Studies gave lunch packets to the out-patients at Tshwane Hospital as their contribution on Mandela Day. |

The Western Cape Region identified the Bellville Night Shelter for the homeless as their 'cause' for the day and donated pillows, bedding, non-perishable food products and cleaning products collected by staff. |

As part of the Mandela Day celebrations, staff at the Sunnyside Centre of the Gauteng Region embarked on a cleaning campaign at the Flavius Mareka High School in Atteridgeville. |

Staff members from the Ekurhuleni Regional Service Centre prepared and served soup to the aged at the Daveyton Society for the Aged on Mandela Day. |

The KwaZulu Natal Region assisted the Quarry Heights Primary School by helping them start a food garden and members of staff donated money to feed the children and contributed 638 oranges and other fruits.
The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences visited the Boitshoko Community Home Base Care Centre and Naledi Hospice in Tshepiso West. They prepared food gardens, painted walls and assisted in a feeding scheme for 480 orphans and vulnerable children, 15 elderly people and 84 volunteer staff in the NGO.
The Institute for African Renaissance visited Mothong together with 31 students from about 24 Electoral Commissions in Africa. As part of the Institute’s service to the community in Mamelodi, they helped with cleaning the wetlands and Mothong Site, and stopped at the Solomon Mahlangu Centre for a short lecture.
