The CLAW Multi- Inter- and Transdisciplinarity (MIT) Sub-Committee and Research Indaba@Law hosted a very successful and fruitful MIT research workshop on 12 June 2012. At the workshop, Prof Songca, the Acting Executive Dean of the College of Law, highlighted the benefits of collaborative work in conducting MIT research.

Well-known researchers in this field gave informative talks on aspects of MIT studies. These speakers included Mr J Sehume and Dr L Martin of MISTRA (Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection) who respectively gave an introduction to and reflected on the evolution of the concepts of MIT.

Dr H du Plessis from the HRSC spoke about alternative practices and the application of transdisciplinarity in education and society generally, while Dr Mbiji Mahlangu from the University of Fort Hare gave a practical case study of how MIT was applied in a specific course at their University called “Life, Knowledge and Action: Grounding Programme (LKA/GP)”.

The workshop attendees gained valuable insight into the various MIT methodologies and approaches in preparation for the International MIT Conference which will be held from 13 to 15 August 2012.
