Unisa’s vision is to be the African university in the service of humanity. One of the university’s strategic objectives is to utilise university resources and capacities to empower communities and develop collaborative partnerships in an effort to uplift the disadvantaged. The Durban Bright Site project is a Unisa strategic project that aims to provide Unisa Durban-based students with relevant social work related learning opportunities.

Fourth level social work students are placed at the Bright Site Service Learning Site in their final year of study, where, in collaboration with NGO’S, FBO’S and CBO’S, they render counselling services, facilitate group work and community development work to individuals, groups and community members.

The project currently has three sites: the Point has 30 students, Isnembe Secondary School near Tongaat has 4 students and the Teapots Village in Hilton College has 3 students.

The launch of the Bright Site Project in Durban was launched on 23 May 2012 where Honourable eThekweni Speaker, Cllr L Naidoo delivered the keynote address. Dr B E Zawada (Deputy Executive Dean: College of Human Sciences) unveiled the plaque.
