Unisa online - CSET staff teach in Atteridgeville

In their commitment to introduce secondary school learners to opportunities available in the fields of Science, Engineering and Technology, College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) staff visited nine secondary schools in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. This activity was organised by one of the college community engagement flagship projects called “GirlPower” and was a continuation of the engagement initiated between CSET and Atteridgeville secondary schools in 2010.

Teaching took place on 13 and 20 April and 4 May 2012. Three Atteridgeville high schools were visited per day. During the school visits, CSET members covered different topics in Science, Mathematics and Technology which were highlighted by educators as challenging to learners.

Learners enjoyed the opportunity to engage with CSET’s academic staff and postgraduate students who they saw as role models. They also appreciated the problem-solving skills they learnt.

Teachers expressed appreciation for the college’s collaborative engagement with the schools. They saw this approach as adding strength to their efforts of addressing problems faced by learners in science and mathematics. As they networked with the academics, some teachers were highly motivated to register with Unisa for higher qualifications.

For academic staff at CSET, the experience provided them with an opportunity to interact with their prospective students; an opportunity that most found enriching. “This is one of the greatest moments we have ever had at CSET”, said staff members in the shuttle on their way back to the campus.
